Harton School, South Shields, July 1991-Present

Working in Modern Languages and Equal Opportunities Departments, teaching French and German, providing classroom support for teachers of English, Mathematics, Science, Geography, Information Technology, Religious Education and Design Technology, assisting pupils with literacy difficulties and compiling Individual Education Plans. Contributed to the cross-curricular integration of educational and professional software applications, including multimedia, on Acorn Archimedes computers and stand-alone and networked PCs. Wrote the Equal Opportunities, Special Educational Needs and Information Technology policy chapters of the school's Modern Languages Department handbook. Responsible for the in-house design and desktop-publishing of the school's educational documentation. Commissioned by The Times Educational Supplement in 1992 to write an article on CALL. Pioneered foreign language teaching use of authentic resources from the national public viewdata systems of Austria, Germany, Luxembourg, Spain and Switzerland. Trialled the integration of Großbritannien Urlaub, the British Tourist Authority's German viewdatabase, into the foreign language curriculum of a pupil with learning difficulties. Invited to speak about Modern Languages, Special Educational Needs and Information Technology to a Certificate in Advanced Educational Studies - Special Educational Needs group at the Ripon campus of the University College of Ripon and York St John in June 1996. Give weekly IT support at a special school for pupils with severe learning difficulties.

Assistant Project Coordinator

National Flexible Learning Project North East - Modern Languages, September 1990-June 1991

Responsible for coordinating school projects in four local education authorities. Contributed German teaching materials about travel, including authentic print and viewdata texts, to Harton School's project. Gave talks, workshops and demonstrations on flexible learning, modern languages and information technology. Co-authored reports, analysed and charted data.

South Shields Grammar-Technical School for Boys and Harton School, South Shields, September 1971-July 1990

Taught French and German up to GCE Advanced level. Appointed Head of German in 1977. Spearheaded South Tyneside's Graded Objectives in Modern Languages syllabuses and tests for German at levels 2 and 3 in the late 1970s. Responsible for the partnership between Harton School and the Städtisches Gymnasium Bayreuther Straße, Wuppertal, Federal Republic of Germany. Introduced CALL at Harton School in 1983, using Acorn BBC microcomputers with authoring packages and dedicated software. Initiated the diversification of the first foreign language at Harton School to equalise the status of French and German. Compiled a card index of short authentic texts, each illustrating one of 2000 lexical items in the GCSE German vocabulary list, which is still used to service the school's examinations.
